Post-pandemic Labor Crisis in the Hospitality Industry

As the hotels, casinos, restaurants, and sporting/music venues reopen, they face an ever-growing demand for employees… a need that can’t easily be met.

The ongoing hotel labor crisis was one of the subjects discussed among hotel leadership that attended the Hunter Hotel Investment Conference 2021.

Hospitality Industry Recovery

60% of travelers say they feel safe traveling outside of their community – up from 39% percent in November 2020 – according to Tourism Economics president Adam Sacks.

This number will only increase as the success of the vaccine rollout continues to reduce deaths and hospitalizations from Covid-19.

Hotel Employee Shortage

Some hospitality industry professionals decided to change careers after losing their jobs. Many larger companies shifted employees to different departments during the pandemic. Among other factors, this has put even more stress on an industry starting to rebound.

Hotels, restaurants, and venues across the country are holding job fairs and even offering signing bonuses to increase their staffing levels. But some properties are reducing availability and opening hours to keep service levels up with a smaller staff.

Mitigating Hiring Risks

The increase in fast track hiring can bring about issues: Are employers able to safeguard their customers, other employees, and reputations reliably by screening a large number of potential employees quickly and accurately?

Employee background checks can include a lot of different areas:

  • Verifying an applicant’s work history and education
  • Checking motor vehicle reports, criminal records, credit history
  • Performing drug screenings

If a position is more specialized, employment candidates may need additional screenings.

If you’re looking for pre-employment screenings that are done right and done fast, see how Five Diamond Screening’s background checks can help. We create affordable and effective employee background screenings that meet the needs of hotels, casinos, and hospitality management companies as they return to 100% throughout 2021 and beyond.
