Preventing Convention Center Employee or Contractor Misconduct

A contract consultant tasked with advising on the selection of a food vendor for a convention center was arrested in a bribery scheme.

Are we to believe that this is the first time they have engaged in such a scheme? It’s doubtful. If a criminal background check had been done – including social media searches and employment history – it may have uncovered the relationship between all the parties involved and prevented this from happening in the first place.

Criminal Background Checks FOR Vendors/Contractors

These types of vendor/contractor screenings for convention centers and other venues are no more expensive than an executive background search. They are quick, efficient, and can keep potentially unscrupulous vendors/contractors from taking advantage of unsuspecting clients.

Criminal history checks are particularly important due to the number of states with ban-the-box laws that put limits on the type and timing of questions about criminal histories. It’s a balancing act for hiring managers and human resources departments: Giving an applicant a chance based on their qualifications rather than criminal history, and being liable for a negligent hire.

Will Past Negative Behaviors Repeat Themselves?

A potential employee or contractor’s past negative behavior can pose a potential risk to others at a venue: Employees/coworkers, vendors, guests, and other contractors. Negative behavior by employees or contractors can also damage the convention center or venue’s reputation.

Criminal background checks can reveal previous negative behaviors that will often repeat themselves. Of course, each candidate needs to be considered on a case-by-case basis in accordance with hiring guidelines and laws.
